Training Form

The schedule for VCPA crime prevention training courses for 2010 is shown below. The training courses are grouped into three categories to help individuals choose courses based on their particular training needs: Community Outreach, Professional Development and Supervising Crime Prevention.

The fee for the Basic Crime Prevention course for VCPA members and representatives of in-state law enforcement and government agencies is $95 per individual, per course. For all other individuals not falling in either of the listed categories, the Basic Crime Prevention course fee is $250. 

A course registration fee of $50 for all other training courses, unless otherwise stated, for VCPA members and representatives of in-state law enforcement and government agencies. For all other individuals, the course registration fee for all other training courses is $75 per training course. Participants are responsible for their travel, meals and lodging costs while attending training. All training conducted in Virginia will be approved for DCJS law enforcement in-service credit and may be applied to the Crime Prevention Specialist training requirements. All training registrations will be processed by the VCPA. After the VCPA receives a course registration, information about the training site and lodging will be sent to course registrants

Seating is limited for all courses.  . Organizations are limited to five training slots per course unless prior arrangements have been made with the Executive Director. As the date of the course approaches, additional training slots will be offered to organizations wishing to register additional individuals, if space is available. Please do not call the listed training academies to register for training courses. Remember that this training is in great demand. If you sign up for a training course but must later cancel, please notify the VCPA at least five working days prior to the course. This will allow us to offer the slot to another person.  Failure to cancel registration will result in a $25 course cancellation fee.

PCPP - Private Crime Prevention Practitioner Training
The fee for private security professionals registering for VCPA training courses that will qualify for certification as a Private Crime Prevention Practitioner is $75 per day (set by DCJS). The fee for VCPA Corporate Members applying for PCPP training is $50 per training day for the first five (5) individuals registered during a calendar year.


  

Community Outreach Courses

Building Blocks for a New Volunteer Program (8 hours) Course Outline There is no regsitration fee for this course.
Law enforcement volunteer programs vary by agency but the principles in their foundation are universal. This introductory course teaches attendees how to implement a volunteer program within a law enforcement agency. Participants will come away with a greater understanding of the importance of program infrastructure, recruitment, selection and management, training, recognition, and assessment. These building blocks will resonate with agencies just starting out with volunteers. In partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police - Volunteers in Police Service Program - VIPS.

Basic CPTED for Planners, Architects, and Law Enforcement (16 hours)

This course provides instruction on CPTED or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design for community planners, architects and other design professional involved in community development and revitalization. The course will focus on the community planning process and how to incorporate CPTED into zoning, planning, economic development, historic preservation and code enforcement.

Advancing an Existing Law Enforcement Volunteer Program (8 hours)  There is no regsitration fee for this course.

After establishing a law enforcement volunteer program, many coordinators find themselves asking, “What’s next?” This training works to answer that question by providing information about volunteer management issues, advocacy and sustainability, innovative ideas, personnel issues, engaging youth, public health crises, recognition, and funding. By expanding the vision of a program coordinator, the volunteer program will have the potential to grow and succeed. In partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police Volunteers in Police Service Program - VIPS.

Advanced Crime Prevention (24 hours) Course Outline

This course provides additional crime prevention training to individuals who have been certified as Crime Prevention Specialists or others who wish to enhance their crime prevention training.Some of the topics planned for this course include:Gang Awareness; Crime Analysis for Crime Prevention; Surveillance Technology; DCJS and VCPA Updates and other topics.

Basic Crime Prevention (40 hours) This course provides an introduction to opportunity based crime prevention. Topics addressed in the course include: History & Theory of Crime Prevention; Crime Prevention Law and Liability; Neighborhood Watch; Personal Safety; Terrorism Awareness and Prevention, Business Crime Prevention; Security Devices; Security Lighting; CPTED; Security Assessments (with an on-site security assessment exercise) School Safety; Auto Theft Prevention; Fraud Prevention and Crime Prevention Resources.

This course will provide an overview of the programs that focus on child safety: missing and exploited children, child internet safety, cyberbullying and school safety. Representatives of the Virginia State Police will provide an overview of the operation of the Sex Offender Registry and the Amber Alert System.

Crime Prevention Specialist Recertification (40 hours)

The Virginia State Police will conduct a forty hour advanced crime prevention course for Crime Prevention Specialist Recertification. This course is intended for individuals who are certified Crime Prevention Specialists. There are ten (10) training slots available for individuals from local law enforcement agencies. Representatives from local law enforcement agencies must register through the VCPA. Conducting Threat Assessments (16 hours)

This course will teach participants how to conduct security threat assessments for homes and small businesses. The students will also work as teams to conduct assessments of several locations sites near the training site.

Protecting Senior Citizens (8)

This course will provide an overview of the programs that focus on protecting senior citizens. The course will address: aging issues - statistics, population and demographics; consumer protection for seniors; frauds, scams,and safety for seniors; senior citizens academy and volunteerism; Project Lifesaver and Alzheimer’s issues; elder abuse case investigation and prosecution - a case study and disaster preparedness and senior citizens.

Refuse to Be a Victim - Personal Safety (12 hours) Course Outline

This course teaches crime prevention practitioners how to deliver the Refuse To Be A Victim® seminar, which is geared toward awareness and prevention of criminal confrontations. It provides participants information they can use to minimize their chances of criminal attack. Topics include home, automobile, personal and Internet security. The seminar is sponsored by the National Rifle Association.

Safer By Design - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (16 hours)

This course serves as an introduction to CPTED or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. The course will address the following: Overview of Crime and Prevention; Safe and Unsafe Surroundings; History and Theory of CPTED; Basic CPTED Principles; Target Hardening; Lighting Landscaping and Maintenance; and Traffic Calming; Community Planning; Site Plan Review; Site Assessments; Implementing CPTED and CPTED Resources.

Security Technology Week (34hours)

The training is provided in partnership with Medeco Security Locks; Hubbell Lighting; Ted Ake, a retired lighting engineer and Seth Ogins, an alarm industry professional. The first three days of training will be conducted at the Medeco facility in Salem and the last two days of training will be conducted at the Hubbell facility in Christiansburg. Christiansburg is about 25 miles south of Salem just off Interstate 81. The courses are approved by DCJS for law enforcement in-service training credit and can be applied to the Crime Prevention Specialist certification. Beverage breaks will be provided by Medeco and Hubbell each day. Lunch will be provided by Medeco on Tuesday and Wednesday and by Hubbell Lighting on Friday.

Security Locks - Medeco (14 hours) Course Outline

Medeco provides this class to help educate police officers and other security personnel on the tactics criminals use to break into a building or residence. Students learn how mechanical and electronic locking devices operate, the types of attacks used to defeat those devices, and what features to look for when choosing or recommending locks or other security hardware.The training includes a tour of the Medeco manufacturing facility. Understanding Alarm Systems (8 hours) 

Salem - MEDECO Headquarters
This course provides an overview of the installation and operation of security alarm systems, conducted by Seth Ogins, an alarm industry professional. The course will address: Basic Alarm Technology; Types of Alarm Systems; Residential and Commercial Applications and Reducing False Alarms.

Security Lighting (12 hours)

Christiansburg - Hubbell Lighting Headquarters (lunch provided on Friday)
This course provides an introduction to security lighting applications for homes and businesses presented by Ted Ake, a retired lighting engineer formerly employed by Hubbell Lighting. The training includes a nighttime lighting survey.

Supervising Crime Prevention Courses

Marketing Crime Prevention (8 hours)This course provides participants with a variety of skills to help them market their crime prevention programs and services. The training will focus on understanding and working work with the news media, gaining community and corporate support, communication methods and tools and presentation skills.

Supervising Crime Prevention (16 hours)

The purpose of this course is to help supervisors to coordinate the delivery of crime prevention and other oriented policing services. The increasing demand for these services can present a significant challenge for the supervisors and staff that deliver such services. The course will include the following: Overview of Crime Prevention; Models for Supervising Community Oriented Services; The Impact of Organizational Structure and Management on Community Oriented Services; Developing and Maintaining Community Support and Involvement; The Role of Policies, Job Descriptions and Performance Appraisals and Supervisors Problem Solving Work Sessions.
